Twitter Clients: A True Story!
July 4th, 2009 by Rick DiscoSo now that I have become totally addicted to Twitter, I have also decided on my favourite Twitter clients so that I 1) don’t have to be at a computer to tweet and 2) when I am at a computer, I don’t have to refresh the whole friggin time!
Read about all about my search after the jump!
I started off checking out the ones Twitter recommends at twitter.com/downloads and got frustrated with the whole Adobe Air thing. All of the Air apps run fine, they just don’t integrate into KDE nicely at all and were just in the way instead of being a helpful little Twitter engine. I tried the built-in KDE Twitter widget and it’s even worse. There is no scroll bar, so you can show the last how ever many your screen can fit and if you get any more updates… BAM the others are gone forever.
At this point I gave up on the desktop applications and moved to check out a bunch of apps for my phone. I have a Nokia 6120 Classic that runs Symbian S60. If you have a Windows Mobile phone or an iPhone there are awesome apps out there. For S60 phones, I settled on Snaptu. Its a pretty cool app that allows you to get a bunch of networks on your phone. I have only used the Twitter and Facebook ones but there are plugins for Google Calendar etc. Snaptu has full support for replies, retweets etc. The only feature it is missing, is the option to add an image via Twitpic. Fortunately my phone has such a TERRIBLE camera that I couldn’t use it even if i wanted to.
So with a mobile Twitter success in my pocket, I went back to finding the perfect desktop application. I finally found Choqok… a native KDE app (KDE 4) that is everything I could want. For MAC OSX (for Caryn) I found her Syrinx which also integrates much nicer than those damn non-native Air apps.
And thats my geek for the day!
^5!
